About the University of Queensland
The University of Queensland (UQ) is a research-intensive university with a commitment to advancing knowledge and developing innovative solutions to the complex challenges of the contemporary world. As a public institution of the State of Queensland, UQ seeks to conduct research for the public good with the highest level of integrity. UQ has a commitment to conducting impactful and ethical discovery research and collaborating with research partners to translate research into outcomes that enrich communities, the economy and the environment.
The challenge
With their previous ethics management systems being more than 20 years old and reaching end of life, UQ was looking for a contemporary system that could modernise their ethics management. UQ required an ethics management system that could integrate with other university systems and reduce the administrative load of entering and extracting data, and allow data connectivity that supports enterprise reporting and analytics capabilities.
As compliance requirements for the university sector increase, areas where administrative labour can be reduced are highly sought after.
UQ required an ethics management system that could:
- Merge functionality of human and animal ethics systems that were previously standalone
- Reduce data silos and time spent finding and re-entering data already collected in other university systems
- Reduce administrative time spent on increasing compliance obligations
- Provide access to information in near real-time
One of the issues with the older animal ethics system was that it was standalone, meaning that ethics applications required a lot of collecting and retyping of information. OmniStar allowed us to integrate information such as UQ’s organisational structure and an up-to-date animal list, meaning there has been a big uplift in data quality.
David Waters MyResearch Project ManagerThe solution
OmniStar has allowed human and animal ethics processing to be managed in a single system, enabling UQ to spend less time collating and re-entering data that were already collected in other systems, helping UQ focus on entering new data that is important to ethics processes.
This is intended to reduce the administrative burden of meeting increasing compliance obligations, ensuring UQ is meeting their ethical standards and governance requirements.
Why you should try OmniStar
Integration
OmniStar allowed previously separate systems to be merged into a single system, reducing the administrative labour required to manage multiple separate systems.
Compliance
A unified ethics management system helps reduce the administrative burden of increasing compliance requirements.
Data integrity
Integrating multiple systems into the one management system has improved access to data, preventing data silos and reducing opportunities for errors to be introduced through data entry.
